Tae Kwon Do

Dr. Alexander Laszlo's Tae Kwon Do class.

Dr. Alexander Laszlo is a certified Tae Kwon Do instructor and member of ChungDoKwanUSA. He has thirty-one years of experience in the Martial Arts and is a 4th Degree Black Belt in the Chung Do Kwan style of Tae Kwon Do (twenty-four years experience), and a 2nd Degree in Shotokan Karate-do (seven years experience).

Dr. Laszlo's style of Tae Kwon Do involves a traditional form of practice of the Art, beginning with seated meditation to clear the mind and focus attention on the activities at hand. The first activity is stretching, to prevent strained or pulled muscles and to increase flexibility. Foundation exercises and choreographed movements (forms, known in Korean as Kuma) are then practiced.

This is followed by three-step sparring, a partner drill that provides the student with the opportunity to develop and perfect coordination, distancing and control through a variety of defensive maneuvers. Students, excluding White and Yellow Belts, then move on to free-style sparring. Absolutely NO offensive contact takes place.

The class culminates with cool-down exercises and seated meditation once again. Students of Tae Kwon Do learn the art of self-defense in a conditioning program that also sharpens their physical and mental powers.

Dr. Alexander Laszlo

Dr. Laszlo speaks:

The class I would teach would meet twice a week and be open to anyone interested in physical fitness, mind-body coordination, self-mastery and practical self-defense. Students aged 8 to 80 are welcome to train, though I would have separate classes for youth (8-18) and adults (19-80).

I have studied the Martial Arts since 1984, with now over 30 years of experience as both student and, for the last 18 years, as instructor. I have earned a 4th Dan Black Belt from the South Central Tae Kwon Do Association, a 4th Dan from the Chung Do Kwan Alliance, and 2nd Dan from Shotokan Karate-do International. Currently, I am a ranking instructor of the ChungDoKwan USA organization, having founded and run the Presidio Outdoor Dojang (POD) of San Francisco for the last 6 years.

My interest in establishing a new dojang (Tae Kwon Do training hall) in Occidental is to continue my own training while at the same time supporting the local community here. I have toured the Occidental Community Center and find it to be well suited to my needs and, more significantly, would not like to see such a fine community center shut down. It is my intention to teach a class and in so doing to contribute to the revitalization of the OCC.

Those interested in Tae Kwon Do, between the ages of 8 and 80, should contact the OCC, or come to one of our community meetings.
